The story
A father’s undying love for his son.
Single father, Koni, never believed his mother’s Chickasaw legends about the Soul Eater. He has not thought of her stories for years, easy to do living in Seattle with his little son, Cash, so far away from her house on their Oklahoma reservation. Then, one night, the Soul Eater steals Cash’s soul and drags Cash down into the underworld.
Now Koni must embark on an epic journey, tracking the Soul Eater cross-country with the help of Chokfi’, the Chickasaw trickster rabbit, who Koni suspects has ulterior motives. To save Cash, Koni must discover the fire within himself and reconnect with his tribal heritage, all while making sure Chokfi’ does not outwit him along the way.

About the novel
Old stories, not trapped in time.
Saving Cash is a first-of-its-kind, epic, indigenous fantasy tale. It is one of only a few novels that explores southeastern mound builder legends by reinvigorating and repackaging traditional Chickasaw stories for a modern audience by blending contemporary society and magical realism into a rare and bizarre road trip to the other side of the universe.
In Chickasaw culture, storytelling is an important way to preserve tradition. Saving Cash adapts and retells the author’s own tribal legends in a way that is engaging yet sensitive to custom. Tribal stories do not have to be trapped in time. By retelling them, Saving Cash encourages readers to wrestle with their present by drawing on the wisdom of the past.
